Foundation Isolation

FABSORB™ Foundation Isolation Material

An integral part of most machine tool installations is a properly designed foundation which will meet the machine's support requirements. Isolating a vibration-sensitive or vibration-producing machine requires isolation of its support mass or foundation.

FABSORB™ foundation isolation material is an effective vibration isolation material that has been specifically designed for vibration isolation applications of support foundations for machine tools, shock testing equipment, grinders, etc.

FABSORB™ material absorbs machine induced energy, limits the transmission of higher frequency disturbances and provides isolation from ambient and induced shock and vibration, which otherwise would affect the accuracy of the machine being installed.

Some features and benefits of FABSORB™ foundation isolation material:

  • Not subject to "wicking" moisture
  • Available in 1/2", 1" and 2" thicknesses
  • Available in 24" x 108" or 48" x 108" sheets
  • Natural frequency as low as 11 Hz

Sizes

FABSORB™ vibration isolation material is manufactured in the following standard sheet sizes for base and sidewall isolation:

Type

Size
FABS 05M 48" x 108" x 1/2" thk
FABS 10M 48" x 108" x 1" thk
FABS 20M 48" x 108" x 2" thk
FABS 10H 24" x 108" x 1" thk
FABS 20H 24" x 108" x 2" thk

A vibration site survey/analysis will determine the levels of vibration existing at your site, which is essential for proper vibration control recommendations to be made. Please contact Fabreeka's® Engineering Department for assistance with your particular application or if you would like information regarding a vibration site survey.

The following is data recorded on site before and after FABSORB™ vibration isolation material was installed.

Data - Before isolation
Transient input of shear on machine shop floor.

Data - After isolation
Isolated response on foundation isolated with FABS 20M type material under 5 psi load.

Methods of Installation

The construction of the foundation and the installation of the isolation material are generally performed using either of two methods:

Method 1

Installation site is excavated to specified depth and grade. Pit is formed and poured. FABSORB™ base and sidewall panels are installed in pit. Foundation is poured.

Method 2

Installation site is excavated to specified depth and grade. FABSORB™ base panels are installed on grade, and foundation is formed and poured. Forms are then removed and FABSORB™ sidewall panels are placed along foundation sides. Soil is backfilled up to isolated foundation. Floor slab is poured on grade.

Some typical FABSORB™ applications include:

  • Dynamometers
  • Grinders
  • Machine Tools
  • Shock Testing Equipment
  • Electro-Dynamic Shakers
  • Floors
  • Test Rigs
  • Coordinate Measuring Machines
  • Anechoic Chambers
